In this class, you’ll discover how to tell if basic western or English tack is well—or poor—fitting. If your horse isn’t comfortable while they’re working, they’re probably not working to their full potential. Learn to spot mistakes—and potential disasters—before they happen. This course will cover the basics of saddle, bridle, and bit fitting in both English and western tack sets. You’ll also learn about tack anatomy, as well as a few of the many accessories available, and the purposes they serve. This class will be taught by ranch owner Lessa Ritzma, whose previous career credits include zookeeper and exotic animal trainer, along with over twenty years of horse experience. Guest lecturers may teach portions of the class. This is an audit-only, hands-off class. A live equine may participate for the demonstration portion. In this class, you’ll discover easy, gentle techniques for loading difficult horses, how to properly hitch up a trailer, how to drive safely with a trailer, and how to deal with contingencies while hauling. You’ll learn safe loading and unloading, as well as checklists to ensure your trailer is in good condition and ready for the road. In this class, you’ll learn how to create an emergency plan. When seconds count, having a course of action can be critical to saving lives. You’ll also learn what supplies you should have on hand, how to prepare for emergencies, and how to communicate effectively during one. Course topics will include staging, loading, supplies, backup plans, and training staff to react appropriately. This class will be taught by ranch owner Lessa Ritzma, whose previous career credits include zookeeper and exotic animal trainer, along with over twenty years of horse experience, along with industry professionals and large animal evacuation experts. In this class, you’ll discover the techniques zookeepers use to teach animals to participate in their own medical care. Whether your horse is nervous, doesn’t like surprises, had a bad experience, or just won’t stay put, regular training and positive reinforcement can teach them to stand still for injections. Even if your horse is perfect for injections, this course will explore the nuances of timing in training and provide another building block for shaping your own behaviors. While the nuances of equine nutrition and fitness are ever-changing (just like humans), this course will cover the basics and give you enough information to make your own decisions. Horses spend most of their lives on their feet, rarely laying down to rest. As prey animals, their instincts and physiology are primed to be able to flee from predators at a moment’s notice. For some owners and their horses, soundness can be a constant struggle and will result in the majority of time spent out of work.
In this class, you’ll discover the origins of the phrase, “no hoof, no horse”. Learn about the main conditions affecting horse soundness, their levels of severity, best preventative and treatment practices, and how to detect lameness on the ground. This class will also cover leg wrapping, including the different types and their purposes, and how to correctly apply them. Grooming is an essential part of the care of your horse, whether you’re heading for the Olympics or the trails. Students will learn the basics of brushing, bathing, and braiding, as well as the importance of hoof and leg care. We will also address controversial grooming practices and distribute a list of essential grooming tools and supplies for the health and well-being of your horse. This class will be taught by ranch owner Lessa Ritzma, whose previous career credits include professional dog and horse groomer, zookeeper, and exotic animal trainer, along with over twenty years of horse experience. This is an audit-only class with optional participation. A live equine will participate in the demonstration portion, with a lecture and Q&A to follow.
