Presented by Iron Oak Canyon Ranch's Animal Care Academy, this segment of our Equine Education series of clinics and classes will focus on bond-building in the form of the recently popular but always-classic liberty work, utilizing positive reinforcement.
In this live-demonstration, participation-optional class, students will learn how to do ground work with a school horse, without the aid of a halter, lead, whip, or bridle. They’ll learn how to approach horses effectively and confidently on the ground, create a follow behavior, engage in safe play, and use their body language to move the horse through obstacles. By allowing the horse the freedom of participation, liberty work is an excellent way to build a stronger relationship and improve communication with your horse. This class will be taught by ranch owner Lessa Ritzma, whose previous career credits include zookeeper and exotic animal trainer, along with over twenty years of horse experience. This is an audit-only, hands-on class. A live equine will be available for the participation portion, with a lecture and Q&A to follow. All participants will qualify for the Equine Education: Liberty Work credit for Iron Oak Canyon Ranch's Equine Education certificate. $50 per participant for 1.5-hour class. Limit 10 participants. Weather permitting. For an additional $10, students may purchase a mini training kit, which they can take home and use to immediately apply the principles learned in class to their own horse.
