Bring OUR ANIMALS to you, with no risks, mess, or hassle
The way we teach is rapidly changing, but that doesn't mean your students need to miss out on making memories or enhancing their learning with real-life experiences. Iron Oak Canyon Ranch's virtual wildlife education can teach your classroom, school assembly, troop, or other group about domestic and exotic animals, or how to be a good neighbor to San Diego's native wildlife safely, via Zoom, Skype, or another digital video meeting service.
We can customize a program just for you, or we can offer any of our existing modules, for most group sizes and at age-appropriate interpretive levels. All programs are given by a professionally-trained public speaker, informal science educator and interpreter, zookeeper, and animal trainer. All programs feature a live animal presentation and may include biofacts as well.
Bring us to you, stay safe, and learn something wild.
Pre-planned Programs:
Backyard Birds: This program discusses the benefits and impacts of keeping your own poultry or gamebirds in your backyard. Learn how to minimize your flock's impact on native birds. Featuring a live animal presentation with one of our helmeted guinea fowl.
Creepy Crawly Good Guys: Many people have a genuine phobia of snakes, spiders, and other insects. This program talks all about how these critters are a necessary part of the food chain and do more work than you might realize to help humans live peacefully alongside them. Specially designed to help attendees conquer their fears, but we do also offer a spookier version in the fall. Featuring a live animal presentation with either one of our education ambassador snakes or tarantula.
Small Mammal Adventure: Some local animals cause more of a problem for humans than others, though they're still pretty cute to look at, at least. Learn about rabbits and rodents and the differences between them, and how to help mitigate their presence in your home and yard. Featuring a live animal presentation with one of our small mammals.
Crazy Smart: Scientists are learning more about animal intelligence every day. This program discusses some of the limitations and amazing abilities of animal cognition. Intended for ages 12 and up as this is a more science-heavy topic. Includes a live demonstration from either a domestic horse or macaw.
Animal Behavior Challenge: This interactive module teaches the very basics of animal training. Your students will participate by working together to choose behaviors and the presenter's response in a live training session with one of our domestic or exotic animals, including but not limited to: horses, goats, sheep, macaw, guinea fowl, snakes, mice, or a domestic dog. Intended for ages 12 and up as this is a more science-heavy topic. Good for developing critical thinking and problem solving skills.
We also offer the following basic animal kingdom modules, designed to add depth to your existing classroom lectures. Can be modified for any age level and customized to specific areas of learning as desired.
Birds 101: Learn what makes a bird a bird, a little bit about their natural history, and some of their adaptations for survival. Features a live demonstration with either a helmeted guinea fowl or a macaw.
